D'Angelico DEDERIC NA 2200 Legendary Guitars Since 1932. A Tribute To John D'Angelico The resurgence of arch-top craftsmen and their individual expressions of guitar-build- ing perfection, is a tribute to John D'Angelico. Certain names and personalities are lifted up by the hands of time, placed on a pedestal and labeled a role model in their field of endeavor. Such was the destiny of John D'Angelico. He had respected and studied the works of early genius by string builders Amati and Stradivarius as well as Lloyd Loar's mastery which over-lapped his own emerging-career. Comments by his peers indicate that John did not see himself as anything more than a builder of guitars; soon to be displaced by the next gen- eration. On the contrary, he inspired a new gen- eration of luthiers, commencing with his devoted apprentice, James L. D'Aquisto, who kept the D'Angelico torch aflame, raised it to another level and passed it along. In 1998 the list seems to grow with every Music Trades Show and acoustic guitar publica- tion. The meteoric rise in value of an original D'Angelico fuels the imagination of prospective builders and collectors, although few foresaw investment possibilities before the 80's. Luthier John Pedersen of Amazing Grace Music in San Anselmo, California, recalls, "In the 60's I could have picked up any number of D'Angelico's for under 5500. In the late 70's a customer brought in a prime instrument. asking 52,800. "You're out of your mind, was my response." By 1993 an original D'Angelico sold for over $100,000, with no ceiling for future sales in sight. The highest profile arch-top build- ers of the 90's, having paid their dues and prevailing through hard times, are now enjoying success that can be measured by the 'back- order predicament that faces the prospective buyer. To be on a reserved order list requires a sub- stantial deposit, an indefinite wait and an open end balance increas- ing as each day goes by. John D'Angelico at his desk.
